A bump hat protects against hitting your head on stationary objects—low beams, pipes, the underside of a vehicle. That's it. It is not designed to absorb impact from falling objects. A hard hat is rated for impact and penetration protection under ANSI/ISEA Z89.1. The question is simple: is there a risk of things falling from above?
My version of this mistake: I ordered bump hats for a construction site because they were cheaper and "basically the same." They were not. The site supervisor caught it within minutes of the boxes arriving. $890 in the trash, plus a two-day delay while we waited for the right gear. So answer that question before you even look at styles: falling objects, or no falling objects?
Step 2: Match the Hard Hat Class to the Work Environment
Once you know you need a hard hat, the next question is which class. A surprising number of people skip this entirely and just pick a color. Actually, they pick a color and skip the class question altogether.
- Class G (General): impact protection plus limited electrical protection up to 2,200 volts.
- Class E (Electrical): rated for higher voltage exposure, up to 20,000 volts.
- Class C (Conductive): impact protection only, with no electrical protection. People grab these because they're lightweight—but they're not for any work near energized equipment.
For most construction and industrial crews, Class G is the standard. For utility electrical work, go Class E. We bought Class C caps for a crew that occasionally worked near energized panels, and it cost us a full day of retraining plus a replacement order. Buy by hazard, not by price.
On the style side, the cowboy/western hard hat—like the Jackson Safety cowboy hard hat—has become popular with utility, ranch, and oilfield crews. The wide brim looks distinctive, but it's also functional: more shade, better rain deflection. People searching for "Eddie Jackson safety" are usually looking for this same Jackson lineup. Just make sure the specific model carries the right class rating. The style alone doesn't tell you that.
Step 3: Verify Accessory Compatibility—Especially Hard Hat Lights
This mistake still stings. In early 2023, we ordered hard hat lights for a night crew. Great idea in theory. The problem: we bought lights designed for slotted helmets, and our hard hats weren't slotted. 124 lights, zero that fit a single helmet. About $540 down the drain, plus a month of the crew using phone flashlights.
If you're adding a hard hat light—and for night work, it's worth it—check these three things before ordering:
- Does the helmet have a slot system for accessory mounting?
- Does the light's mount match the hat's design (slot mount, brim mount, or clip)?
- What battery type does it use? For remote crews, AA-powered lights beat rechargeable-only units, since batteries can be swapped in the field.
Also, don't assume a pricier light is automatically better. The budget options are a gamble—they work until they fail, usually at the worst moment. The premium tactical lights come with features most crews don't need. We've settled on the mid-tier, around $25–35 per light, and that's held up well for two years now.
Step 4: Choose Welding Gloves by Process, Not Brand Name
There's no single "best" welding glove. The right glove depends on the welding process, and this is where a lot of bulk buys go wrong.
TIG welding needs dexterity. You want a thin, flexible glove, typically kidskin or goatskin. MIG and stick welding generate more heat and spatter, so you want a heavier glove with insulated lining and a longer cuff. Ordering the wrong type because the box says "welding gloves" will not end well.

Step 5: Think Head-to-Toe, Not Head-First
A hard hat and gloves are a solid start, but they are not a PPE program. I found this out the hard way in September 2022. I submitted an order that covered head, hands, eyes, and feet for a crew that was about to cut concrete. When the inspector asked about respiratory protection, I didn't have an answer. That cost us a citation, a one-day stop-work order, and a rush respirator order at roughly double the normal price.
Now I run a simple walkthrough before any order. It's not a formal JSA, just a list of questions:
- Eyes and face: Z87+ rated safety glasses with side shields for impact risk. Splash goggles for chemical work. A face shield when there's flying debris—glasses do not count as a face shield.
- Hearing: Sustained noise above 85 dBA over an 8-hour shift requires hearing protection.
- Hands: Cut risk, heat risk, or chemical risk? The answer changes the glove entirely.
- Feet: Steel toe is standard on many sites, but metatarsal guards are needed if heavy objects can land on the top of the foot.
- Respiratory: Dust masks are not respirators. If you need real respiratory protection, OSHA's standard (29 CFR 1910.134) requires fit testing. Don't improvise here.
It's not a fun exercise, but it beats the alternative. Since we started using this walkthrough, we've made it through inspections without last-minute panic buys.
Step 6: Set Up a Replacement Schedule Now
This is the step everyone forgets—I forgot it for years. Hard hats are not lifetime equipment. Most manufacturers recommend replacing the shell after five years, and the suspension more often, typically every 12 months depending on conditions. UV exposure, extreme heat, and chemical contact all shorten that. If you see cracks, chalking, or fading on the shell, replace it immediately. Don't wait for the annual review.
Welding gloves follow the same logic. Cracked leather or visible liner means they're done. Safety glasses should be replaced when scratches start to affect vision—because a worker who can't see clearly will just take them off, which is worse than the scratches. I've watched it happen.
Since we implemented a formal replacement schedule, our safety lead has logged 47 potential issues caught before they became incidents. Expired suspensions, degraded gloves, worn-out eye protection—all caught because we had a date on the calendar instead of a "we'll check it eventually."
A Few Final Notes
If you've read this far, a few extra things I've learned that don't fit neatly into the steps.
First, brands have different strengths. The big names in PPE make solid products—I'm not here to say otherwise—but their lineups are broad. "Good brand" doesn't automatically mean "right product for your crew." What was best practice in 2020 doesn't fully apply in 2025. The fundamentals—protecting the head from impact—haven't changed. The execution has. Check the standard date on the label, not just the certification mark.
Third, spend the money on suspension. A cheap replacement suspension can make an expensive hard hat feel like a torture device. A good one, replaced on schedule, is the difference between a hat that gets worn and one that gets "forgotten" in the truck.
My experience is mostly with construction and light manufacturing crews, in the roughly $50k–$200k annual PPE budget range. If you're running a foundry or a chemical plant, you'll have hazards I've never dealt with—but the checklist itself transfers. Decide the hazard first, verify compatibility, sample before you scale, and put replacement dates on the calendar.
