I've been handling PPE purchasing for my company since 2020, and for the first few years, I was as guilty as anyone. We bought whatever was cheapest from our regular supplier. It was always a Type 1 hard hat—because that's what everyone had, right? The 'standard' hard hat. It's what I wore, what my boss wore, and what the guys on the floor wore.
It wasn't until we had a near-miss incident in 2023 that I actually started digging into the difference between Type 1 and Type 2. And what I found completely changed how I spec out head protection. The short version: if your workers are in an environment with any risk of lateral impact (which is most environments, actually), a Type 1 hard hat is only doing half the job.
Type 1 vs. Type 2: It's Not Just a Spec Sheet Detail
Here's the basic breakdown that you'll get from any safety supplier (but probably won't hear emphasized in a sales pitch):
- Type 1 Hard Hat: Designed to reduce the force of impact from a blow to the top of the head. It's tested with a vertical impact only.
- Type 2 Hard Hat: Tested for impact to the top of the head, but also to the side, front, and back. This is a much more rigorous test.
What most people don't realize is that the 'standard' Type 1 test covers a very narrow scenario: a tool falling straight down. But think about real-world construction, warehousing, or industrial maintenance. How often does someone get hit directly on the top of the head? More often than not, accidents involve swinging objects, falling sideways off a ladder, or hitting a low-hanging beam.
It's tempting to think that 'a hard hat is a hard hat' (which, honestly, is the most dangerous misconception in PPE). But the difference in protection is night and day.
The Inconvenient Truth About Compliance
I remember having this exact conversation with another admin at a networking event. He pushed back: 'But my guys are just doing light assembly. They don't need a space helmet.' I pushed back harder (which, honestly, felt a bit aggressive for a purchasing admin, but this matters).
The truth is, OSHA's 29 CFR 1926.100 requires that head protection 'protect the employee from impact and penetration.' It doesn't specify Type 1 or Type 2. A lot of companies—and I mean a lot—use this as justification for buying the cheaper Type 1. They're technically compliant. But it's the bare minimum. And when you're managing safety for thirty or forty guys who are climbing around scaffolding or dodging forklifts, 'bare minimum' feels like a gamble I'm not comfortable taking.
Here's something vendors won't tell you: the internal cost of a single lateral-impact incident—even a 'minor' one—far exceeds the marginal cost of upgrading from a $12 Type 1 to a $35 Type 2. We added up the paperwork, the lost time, the potential liability (not even counting the human cost), and it was obvious.

I'm not saying every single job site needs a top-of-the-line Jackson Safety Type 2 helmet with a chin strap and a brim. But I am saying that the evidence is overwhelmingly in favor of them for any environment that isn't a pristine office.
1. It's not just about falling objects. The biggest risk in our facility is a worker hitting their head on a pipe or a low-hanging beam. A Type 1 rigid shell offers very little protection for that kind of (very common) accident. A Type 2 helmet's foam liner and extended shell are designed for that.
2. The 'it's for heavy industry' myth. I hear this all the time: 'Type 2 is for heavy construction or demolition.' That's a false dichotomy. A worker in a distribution center scanning boxes is walking under racks and around conveyor belts. If they slip, they're going to hit their head on a steel beam, not a falling object. A Type 2 helmet is arguably more important for them than for a roofer.
3. The 'weight' argument is overblown. When I first proposed switching, the foreman complained that the Type 2 helmets were too heavy and hot. I'll admit, I was worried. We tested the Jackson Safety Topgard (a classic Type 1) against the Jackson Safety BH3 (a Type 2). The difference in weight? Maybe 4-5 ounces. That's the weight of a couple of pens. The comfort difference is negligible. The safety difference is not.

A 12-point checklist I created after my third mistake has saved us an estimated $8,000 in potential rework. The same logic applies to head protection. 5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction.
Creating a simple spec for 'Type 2, full brim, and a 4-point suspension' for all new hires and replacements has streamlined our ordering. We have a single SKU (the Jackson Safety BH3, which we've standardized on). It's one less decision. One less way for a new guy to get injured. One less headache for me.
The Bottom Line
So, when I see a quote that's $5 cheaper per unit for a Type 1 hard hat (surprise, surprise), I don't even flinch. The argument that 'we've always used Type 1' ignores the vast majority of real-world head injury risks. It's a lazy, cost-focused decision that, in my opinion, puts people at risk for the sake of saving a few bucks per year.
I stand by my opinion: for any job with overhead work, moving equipment, or the simple fact of being in an industrial environment, the Type 2 hard hat should be the minimum standard. It's not about being a safety zealot. It's about being a good steward of my budget and a better advocate for the people on the floor.
