In 2018, I bought 40 pairs of $2.80 glasses to save roughly $130 versus the Jackson Safety goggles I'd been ordering. The savings lasted about two weeks—until the lenses started fogging mid-shift and the anti-scratch coating began peeling. Then a grinding spark hit a technician on the cheek. Not the eye. The cheek. What doesn't change with the owner's name is the certification. If a goggle is marked ANSI Z87.1+, it meets the standard whether the box says Jackson Safety or Kimberly-Clark Jackson Safety. According to OSHA (osha.gov, 29 CFR 1910.133), eye protection must comply with the ANSI Z87.1 standard—so that's the marking to look for, not the logo.

3. What should I look for in industrial rubber boots?

4. Are Twisted X steel toe boots safe for the shop floor?

Twisted X is a popular brand in Texas and the Southwest—for good reason. They're comfortable, built well for long days, and the crew actually likes wearing them. Many of their work boots carry the ASTM F2413 safety-toe rating. But not all of them do, and "steel toe" in the product title is not the same as "ASTM F2413 certified."

You put it between you and an approaching bear, ideally at 25–30 feet. The wind, unfortunately, doesn't always cooperate.

Pepper spray for personal defense, on the other hand, is usually a stream. Concentrations vary by product, but the delivery difference probably matters more than the numbers: a stream puts the spray on a specific target—say, an aggressive individual—rather than drifting through the air. That matters outdoors and in tight spaces.

So which should your crew carry? It depends on the task. A worker in bear country needs the EPA-registered fogger. A worker dealing with aggressive dogs or human threats needs the aimed stream. Check local regulations, too—some states restrict what can be shipped and who can carry these products. We keep both in our field kits, but for separate tasks, and clearly labeled.

6. When should I replace PPE that still looks fine?

The March 2023 hard hat recall changed how I think about this. We had 60 hard hats on the shelf, and the supplier's recall notice made us look at the date stamps. Roughly a third were past their stated five-year service life—and nobody had noticed, because they looked fine.

When is the last time you replaced a pair of safety boots that looked perfectly fine? If a boot takes a hard impact, the answer is "right now."
