Ask ten safety managers for their list of "must-have PPE" and you'll get ten different answers. Most of them will be wrong for your operation. That's not because those managers are careless. It's because there's no single right answer that applies to every worksite. The right protective equipment depends on the hazard, the environment, and the person wearing it.

Swapping them is a mistake. Pepper spray on a bear usually just aggravates it, and bear spray on a person creates a legal problem you don't want to explain in writing. If you're working in bear country, carry bear spray on your belt. If you're worried about two-legged threats at a roadside work zone, that's a different tool for a different scenario—keep it in the truck.
Fire Detection
Remote sites and crew trailers don't have a building fire alarm to fall back on. A battery or solar-powered smoke and heat detector with cellular monitoring is the minimum I'd recommend. If you can't hear the alarm from 300 feet away, it's not doing its job. I want to say there's specific NFPA guidance for temporary structures, but don't quote me on the exact section. Verify against your state and local requirements before you spec one.
Scenario C: Warehouse & Logistics
Loading docks, racking aisles, picking lines. The injury statistics don't care about optics. Drops, forklift impacts, and slips on polished concrete create plenty of recordable injuries every year.
Eye Protection

Part of me wants to just say "hire a designer and be done with it." Another part knows that many maintenance managers don't get that budget until after an incident. So here's the middle ground: if your racks are above 20 feet or your aisles are narrower than the code assumes, get a professional review. It's cheaper than explaining to a fire marshal why the system didn't meet code.
How to Tell Which Scenario You're In
Real facilities often blend scenarios. A distribution center might have a warehouse floor and a small fabrication shop in the corner. A utility yard has a workshop and thirty trucks going into the field. Here's how to sort it out:
- Walk the floor at the start of a shift. Look at what your crew is wearing, then check the lockers. The gap tells you what's uncomfortable or impractical.
- Review the incident log. Are your injuries impact-related, slip-related, or foreign-object-in-the-eye? Match your PPE to the pattern.

The Final Step: Getting Honest Quotes
Once you've picked the right equipment, you still have to buy it. Here's the advice I give every client before they sign a purchase order:
