Jackson Safety and PPE Buying: 7 Questions I Hear as an Admin Buyer

I'm the office administrator who handles PPE purchasing for a 400-person company—roughly $80,000 a year in safety supplies across 8 vendors. I report to operations and finance, so I care about compliance, cost, and not getting yelled at later. These are the questions that actually come up, plus the one that should.

1. What does Jackson Safety actually make?

Jackson Safety is kind of a quiet brand. Their catalog covers hard hats, safety glasses, welding helmets, face shields, gloves, and respirators. They're best known for eye and face protection, and their welding lines have a solid reputation. For me, the bigger thing is that they cover enough categories that I can order most of our PPE from one supplier without a lot of second-guessing.

I started ordering from them in 2020, when the Jackson Nemesis glasses were the pair our crew didn't immediately complain about. That matters more than you'd think.

2. Are Jackson Nemesis safety glasses worth the money?

Short answer: yes, in my experience. The Nemesis line sits in the mid-price range—not the cheapest, not premium. They meet ANSI Z87.1 impact requirements, and they're comfortable enough that workers actually wear them. We've bought maybe 200 pairs since 2021, and the main complaint isn't the lens; it's people losing them.

One thing I tell every supervisor: check the marking on the lens. If it says Z87+, that means it passed high-impact testing. If a pair of glasses doesn't have that marking, it can look like safety glasses but it's really just eyewear. Don't let a supplier convince you otherwise.

3. Is the Jackson Safety Western Outlaw hard hat actually safe, or just a cowboy thing?

It's a real hard hat. The Western Outlaw is a full-brim hard hat with a western look, but what makes it safe is the ANSI Z89.1 label inside the shell. We have a few in our fleet for outdoor crews, and the brim catches sun and rain better than a standard cap-style hard hat. It also doesn't hurt that workers think it looks good.

The important part is to read the class. ANSI Z89.1 classifies hard hats by electrical performance: Class G (general, tested to 2,200 volts), Class E (electrical, tested to 20,000 volts), and Class C (conductive, no electrical protection). If your guys are near energized parts, don't grab a Class C just because it's comfortable.

4. Why would I choose wedge sole work boots?

Wedge sole work boots have a flat bottom with no raised heel. That design gives you a bigger contact patch with the ground, which means solid stability on flat surfaces and less pressure on the ball of your foot. They're also easier to clean than lugged heels because mud doesn't pack into a gap. A lot of guys in our warehouse and on concrete love them.

But then again, there's a trade-off. If your crew is on ladders all day, a heeled boot is actually better because the heel hooks the rung. A wedge sole doesn't do that as well. The best answer depends on the job, not on what's trending. And no matter which style you pick, a real safety-toe boot should have an ASTM F2413 mark. Without that, it's just a boot.

5. Are Skechers work boots a real option for a safety program?

They can be. We added Skechers work boots to our approved list in 2024 after a few warehouse guys asked to try them. Some models are legitimately rated—ASTM F2413 for impact and compression, plus electrical hazard and slip-resistant outsoles. The comfort is a big deal on 10-hour shifts; I've had workers say they honestly didn't want to take them off at the end of the day.

But don't assume every Skechers work boot is safety-rated. Some styles are just casual boots that look rugged. You have to check the spec sheet for each model, not just the name. I'm not 100% sure every current model qualifies, so I verify before approving anything.

6. Are black nitrile gloves food safe?

Color doesn't determine food safety. Black nitrile gloves can be food safe, but only if the packaging or technical data sheet says they're FDA-compliant for food contact. In the U.S., that usually means the glove material meets FDA regulations for rubber articles (often cited as 21 CFR 177.2600).

A lot of black nitrile gloves are sold for mechanics or salons and are not food-contact certified. If you're buying for a commercial kitchen, ask the distributor for the certificate. Black nitrile on the box is not enough. This is one of those areas where five minutes of checking beats a failed inspection later—and that's coming from someone who learned it the hard way.

7. What's the biggest PPE purchasing mistake?

The biggest mistake is buying on price before you check the paperwork. We all get budget pressure. But a cheaper hard hat that doesn't have the right ANSI class, or a face shield that isn't marked to the right standard, costs more in the long run—through reorders, reissues, or a citation. According to OSHA (osha.gov), employers must provide PPE that fits and is appropriate for the hazard. That's not a suggestion.

I've got a 12-point checklist I use for every new product now. It came from my 2020 mistake, when I ordered a rush batch of glasses that turned out not to be impact-rated. I had 2 hours to decide before a deadline; normally I'd compare specs, but there was no time. In hindsight, I should have pushed back on the timeline. The replacement order cost us time and money. That checklist has saved me from that kind of rework more than once.

Standards change, too. As of my 2024 purchasing year, the main ones to know are ANSI Z87.1 for eye protection, ANSI Z89.1 for hard hats, ASTM F2413 for protective footwear, and FDA food-contact compliance for gloves. Verify current versions before you order—don't just take my word for it.
